Even though the lake and surrounding areas are considered common property, we are responsible for maintaining shorelines and keeping them clear of debris and trash. That can be daunting for first-time lake homeowners, so we've compiled some helpful information to keep your shore in great shape and ready for fun!
Be sure to consult the Cherry Hills Lake Association by-laws before moving forward with any projects. Not sure where to find them? Check the Docs section of our website!
The by-laws state that any updates to your property that may obstruct the view of the lake require written notification to and written approval from the Lake Association Board *before* construction. The by-laws also state that anything put into the lake or on the commons area (e.g., fish, plants, or structures) also need Lake Association Board approval.
Nothing can block the commons area around the lake shore (e.g., no fencing or plantings). Anything blocking the commons makes it difficult to apply water treatments or to stroll around the lake. No unauthorized shoreline aquatic plants (such as lily pads) may be put in the lake because they can spread and become invasive.
Here's how our pros keep their shores looking great!
Hi-Yield Killzall Aquatic Herbicide is an excellent non-selective grass and weed killer ideal for non-crop and aquatic sites. It is a water soluble liquid that mixes easily with water for foliar spray applications. One quart (qt) will cover up to 1 acre. (Available online.)
It is important that the rock is white limestone of the same color as all the beaches on the lake. White angular limestone rock should cover your shoreline to the grassline, no black tarp showing, and weeds pulled from the rocks. Delivery is extra, and you will need to hire someone to spread the rock if you do not want to do it all yourself! (Available at Vulcan Materials: 2906 N. Oak St, Urbana, 217-355-1307.)
If your car needs washing or detailing or if your boat is a bit grimy, have the cleaners come to you! Family Love is a *mobile* cleaning service for all your auto and power washing needs: cars, walkways, driveways, boats, trailers, houses, etc. If it's "power wash approved" and needs to be clean, "call them indeed!" (Available by Family Love Empire: Tay or Shay, 217-866-6643.)
Because our lake neighborhood is part of Champaign township (not the City of Champaign), it is good to know that we can use the township site on Kearns to recycle yard waste and electronics! The person to call for large branch pick up is Keith Padgett (217-352-0321). The website says that they only pick up at certain times of the year, but ifyou asGive them a call (or just stop by) to see what they take. (Recycle at Champaign Township Assessor's Office: 3900 Kearns Dr, Champaign, 217-359-2411.)
